Opening up your Outreach & Mission

Always look to use the individual giftings of every member of the church in order to ensure your outreach and mission reaches all people!

  • Are you ensuring you actually reach out to those on the edges of society?  That includes not only poor and homeless people, but anyone who is marginalised.
  • If you are distributing literature or a DVD/video do you have alternative formats available? e.g. is there a subtitled or signed version of the DVD? Is there a braille or giant print or audio version of the leaflet? Is there an audio described version of a DVD or film?
  • Do you have someone who is prepared to read and describe outreach material to those who cannot do this for themselves?
  • People should know how to get an alternative even if they are not carrying it with them.
  • Are any of your outreach and mission events readily accessible to all people? Have you thought through what facilities are available?  Consider making it a church policy to only use fully accessible venues, both indoors and outdoors (no gravel paths, accessible toilets nearby etc.).

A Church that fails to include disabled people is itself disabled.

This page is a starting point. You will find questions to ask yourself when thinking about how easy to access, how welcoming your church is to disabled people. The partners of Churches for All are there to assist you with the answers.
